Hashi Sushi - Great food, cheap seats

My family and I tried Hashi Sushi for the first time on Saturday night. We opted for the sidewalk seating, to enjoy the evening air.

The good: space and food
The space is lovely and well-decorated. The indoor seating is very nice and sophisticated. It's a very pretty place.

We had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi ($22) and the deep fried madai ($24) entrees, along with the shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber rolls ($9). Inger and I shared a fruity vodka cocktail. All the food was well-prepared and great.

The mahi mahi was delicious, well cooked and served with a side of fried banana that was to die for. It also came with carrots and broccoli rabe. I think it was the best part of the meal, though Inger preferred the madai.

The madai was also scrumptious and served with flavorful papaya sticky rice, which was Lucas' favorite part of the meal. The sauce was a sake reduction and fantastic.

The rolls were crisp and shared among all of us. They were not out of this world, but quite good.

Our server was very good, but some of the other staff were not as great.

The bad
There were some negative aspects.

The outdoor seating is very nice to have, but the chairs were out of character - cheap plastic that made us sweat even more on a hot day.

The service took a while.

Lucas dropped a fork on the floor, and instead of replacing it, the hostess picked it up and put up back on the table. Yuck.

It also felt as though we were being rushed out at the end. I don't like it when a table is cleaned while we are still eating.

The tap water was heavily chlorinated. Double yuck. It was like drinking from a pool. Avoid it.

We liked the place and would go back. It's a bit pricey, but all in all, a very nice addition to the neighborhood. The food was fantastic.

Hashi Sushi is located at 5009 Broadway, between 213th and 214th Street.
